Lab 03 · Straighteners

The best premium hair straighteners: Dyson Airstrait, ghd, T3

Straighteners split into two camps: classic hot-plate irons, now with much smarter temperature control, and Dyson's air-based Airstrait that straightens from wet. The right one depends on your hair and your patience.

Where these picks come from. This shortlist is based on the makers' published specs, the features that matter for each device type, and availability from the brand or Amazon itself. Our own instrument tests are under way; results will be added here, clearly marked. How we test · How we make money

What actually matters

Plate temperature and control

Most hair styles well around 365°F (185°C). Higher is faster but riskier. Good irons hold a steady temperature along the whole plate instead of overshooting.

Plates

Ceramic plates heat evenly and glide; the plate length and width decide how much hair you can do per pass.

Wet-to-dry styling

Air straighteners like the Airstrait dry and straighten at once, with no hot plates touching the hair. The finish is smooth but usually less sleek than a plate iron.

Safety

Auto shut-off and a heat-resistant tip are basics; check the cord length and swivel too.

FAQ

What temperature should I use?

Fine or damaged hair usually needs less heat; very coarse hair more. Many professional irons default to about 365°F (185°C), which is a sensible starting point.

Is the Dyson Airstrait as sleek as a flat iron?

It gives a smooth, natural finish from wet hair, but for a glassy, pin-straight look a plate iron is still faster.
